Under the leadership of Education Committee Chairperson Dr. Brenda B. Brown, the Manasota ASALH Education Committee founded and now sponsors annually the African American “Read In” at Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, FL. The Branch presented funds to the school for the purchase of books for the children on the Black Experience. The books, housed in the school’s Media Center, are used as part of the “Read In” which takes place during Black History Month each year.
This year, the Read-In will be replaced by an educational program based on a comprehensive workbook on the Underground Railroad published by the National Park Service. All fourth graders will participate in this program, learning along with volunteers from Manasota ASALH. The program will culminate with a program at the school on Thursday, February 25th where the children will be visited by a representative from the National Parks Service who will give each of them a Park Ranger Pin.
